One day in Rome sounds impossible. It isn't. With a smart route, early starts and no luggage slowing you down, you can cover the greatest highlights of one of the world's most beautiful cities — and still have time for a proper Italian lunch.
This guide gives you a complete hour-by-hour itinerary for one day in Rome, built around the actual walking distances between attractions, the best times to visit each site, and the golden rule that most travellers ignore.

The golden rule: drop your bags first
If you're arriving in Rome with luggage — whether your accommodation isn't ready yet or you're here on a stopover — the single best thing you can do is store your bags before you start. Rome's cobblestones, crowded attractions and long walking routes make suitcases a genuine obstacle. Rome Bag Storage has two locations in the heart of the city, 3 minutes from the Colosseum and 2 minutes from Piazza di Spagna. Drop your bags, pick up a 6-digit code and start exploring light.
The itinerary
08:00
☕ Breakfast at a local bar
Start like a Roman: cappuccino and a cornetto (Italian croissant) standing at the bar. It's fast, delicious and costs around €2. Avoid the tourist cafés near the main squares — find a small neighbourhood bar one street back for the real experience.
⏱ 20 min 💶 ~€2

🧳 Drop your bags at Rome Bag Storage
If you have luggage, this is the moment. Head to Via Marco Aurelio 18 — 3 minutes from the Colosseum — enter your code, store your bags and you're free. The whole process takes under 5 minutes. Everything you need for the day fits in a small daypack.
⭐ Do this first 📍 Via Marco Aurelio 18 ⏱ 5 min
09:00
🏟️ The Colosseum
Arrive early — this is critical. Queues at the Colosseum can stretch to 2 hours by 11am. With a pre-booked timed entry ticket, you walk straight in. Allow 60–90 minutes inside: the arena floor, the underground chambers and the upper levels are all extraordinary. The scale of it never quite prepares you.
⏱ 60–90 min 🎟️ Pre-book required ✓ Bags-free access only
10:45
🏛️ Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Included in the same Colosseum ticket. Walk through the Roman Forum — the civic heart of the ancient world — and up to the Palatine Hill, where Rome was founded. The views from the top over the Forum below are some of the best in the city. Take your time: this is living history under your feet.
⏱ 60–90 min 🎟️ Same ticket as Colosseum 📍 5 min walk
12:15
🍽️ Lunch in Testaccio
Rome's most authentic food neighbourhood, a 15-minute walk from the Forum. Testaccio was the city's old slaughterhouse district — now it's full of trattorias serving traditional Roman cuisine. Try cacio e pepe, carbonara or supplì (fried rice balls). Expect to pay €12–18 for a full meal. No tourist traps here.
⏱ 60–75 min 💶 €12–18 📍 15 min walk from Forum
13:30
⛲ Trevi Fountain
Take the metro (Line B to Termini, then Line A to Barberini) or a 25-minute walk through the historic centre. The Trevi Fountain is smaller than most people expect — but the Baroque drama of it is extraordinary up close. Throw a coin, take your photo, and don't linger too long: the piazza gets very crowded in the afternoon.
⏱ 20–30 min 🚇 Metro to Barberini ✓ Free entry
14:15
🏛️ The Pantheon
A 10-minute walk from Trevi. The Pantheon is nearly 2,000 years old and still has its original roof — an unreinforced concrete dome that remains an engineering marvel. The oculus (the hole in the top) is open to the sky; on rainy days, the water falls to the marble floor and drains through ancient Roman drainage holes. Entry requires a ticket — book in advance.
⏱ 30–40 min 🎟️ Pre-book recommended 📍 10 min walk from Trevi
15:15
🎨 Piazza Navona & a gelato
Five minutes from the Pantheon, one of Rome's most beautiful Baroque squares. Three fountains, street artists, historic cafés and a perfect spot to sit on the edge of a fountain with a gelato. This is the moment to slow down, people-watch, and let Rome wash over you. Get your gelato from a gelateria on a side street — not the ones facing the square.
⏱ 30–45 min ✓ Free 📍 5 min from Pantheon
16:15
🌹 Spanish Steps & Via Condotti
Head north to Piazza di Spagna (15-minute walk or one stop on Metro A). The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are best in the late afternoon when the light turns golden. The square below hosts Rome's most glamorous shopping street, Via Condotti. From here, Villa Borghese park is a 5-minute walk up the hill — a beautiful place for a rest.
⏱ 30–45 min 🚇 Metro A — Spagna ✓ Free
18:00
🌅 Sunset from the Gianicolo Hill
The Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill) offers the most famous panoramic view of Rome — the entire city spread out below the terrace, best at golden hour. It's a 20-minute walk from the Spanish Steps via Trastevere, or take bus 23 from the river. The view is completely free and rarely crowded at sunset compared to the other classic viewpoints.
⏱ 30 min ✓ Free 🚌 Bus 23 from Lungotevere
19:00
🌿 Aperitivo in Trastevere
Walk down the hill into Trastevere — Rome's most charming neighbourhood, all medieval alleys and ivy-covered walls. Find a bar with outdoor tables for an aperitivo (Aperol Spritz or a local wine) as the evening light turns warm. This is Rome at its most romantic. The neighbourhood comes alive after 7pm.
⏱ 30–45 min 💶 €5–8
20:00
🍝 Dinner in Trastevere
Stay in the neighbourhood for dinner — there are dozens of excellent trattorias tucked into Trastevere's alleys. Book in advance for the better ones, or simply follow the smell of good food down any side street. Romans eat late; 8pm is normal. After dinner, the neighbourhood fills with people of all ages out for an evening passeggiata (stroll) — join them.
⏱ 60–90 min 💶 €18–28 🍷 Book ahead
Practical tips for your one day in Rome
🎟️
Book everything in advance
Colosseum tickets sell out days or weeks ahead. Book online before you travel — don't gamble on walk-up availability.
👟
Comfortable shoes only
You'll walk 5+ km over ancient cobblestones. Sandals and dress shoes will ruin the day. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes.
💧
Use the nasoni fountains
Rome has over 2,500 free drinking fountains ("nasoni") throughout the city. Bring a reusable bottle — the water is clean and cold.
🚇
Metro for longer distances
Line A (Spagna, Barberini) and Line B (Colosseo, Termini) cover the key areas. Buy a 24-hour travel pass — it pays for itself quickly.
☀️
Sun protection in summer
From May to September, Rome is hot. The Colosseum and Forum have almost no shade. Sunscreen, a hat and water are non-negotiable.
📵
Dress codes at churches
Many churches (including the Pantheon) require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf or layer to avoid being turned away at the door.
What to skip — and what to prioritise
With only one day, choices matter. Here's what's genuinely worth your time and what you can leave for next time:
⏭ Skip on day one
• Vatican Museums — needs a full separate day
• Galleria Borghese — requires advance booking, 2 hours minimum
• Day trips (Ostia, Tivoli) — not worth it in 24 hours
• Overpriced restaurants on the main piazzas
• Guided bus tours — you'll cover more on foot
✓ Prioritise these
✓ Colosseum + Forum + Palatine (one ticket)
✓ Pantheon — genuinely unmissable
✓ Trevi Fountain — quick, iconic, free
✓ Trastevere for dinner and evening atmosphere
✓ A gelato at a local gelateria (not the touristy ones)
